Picking a good domain name

Buying a domain name is an easy task nowadays, and if you are willing to spend some cash, you can have it done in a few minutes. But before you buy a domain name, you must pick the domain name. And, from my own experience I can assure you that picking a good domain name can really be a difficult problem.

Choosing a domain name is much like choosing the perfect name for your baby. And when you do that, you need a name that is interesting, catchy and draws attention, something hard to forget, shortly said, a memorable name. The name must also be original and readable of course. Most people think that short names are better as domain names, but this is not necessarily true. A faster name to type is not necessarily easier to remember.

The advantage of a longer name is that you can give the name a meaning; you can say more things, something that will attract visitors. Here is a tip. When choosing a domain name, try to keep the alphabet in mind. When you will name your domain with the first few letters, it will normally show on top on the alphabetically ordered list. This is not quite moral, but it is not illegal.

Also, I recommend you (only in the case of longer names and if you aren't too woried about people typing the domain in the address bar) brake the name into words. So, instead of let’s say www.myownshop.com you can use www.my-own-shop.com and so on. All these type of things will help you in the search engines. But there are other ways you can use to “fool” the search engines.

It is true search engines are smarter and smarter these days, but they still have their limits. So, when choosing a domain name try to use keywords. Let’ say that you sell old magazines on your website that are about web design.

So, use old magazines and web design as keywords for your domain name. The name could look like this: www.oldwebdesignmagazines.com. But, since I recommended breaking the name into words a greater name in our case could be www.old-web-design-magazines.com. The search engine will interpret the dash as a space, so your domain name will be easier to find on the internet.

Another useful technique involves using outrageous or strange domain names, that don't necessarily have anything to do with the actual subject matter of the web site. These kinds of domain names work great on T-Shirts and hats.

As I have already mentioned, when choosing the best domain name, you should choose one that is more effective with all search engines. You need to use your imagination and be creative. Yet, at the same time try to be realistic, and this can be the key to the perfect domain name.
